Fire Resistance

FRC™ pipes that penetrate fire resistance rated walls or concrete floors, achieve fire resistance levels up to and including 4 hours.

FRC™ pipes that have a nominal I.D. of up to and including 750mm, and a pipe wall thicker than 10.8mm which penetrates concrete or masonry fire resistance rated walls or concrete floors, can achieve fire resistance level (FRL) for integrity, of up to -/240/0. When the thickness of the pipe wall is more than 20mm, the FRL for integrity and insulation is -/240/30.

With respect to insulation, fire performance depends on the wall thickness of the FRC™ pipes and the specific details of the caulking systems. However, for the same conditions of installation, the temperature rise can be expected to be less for FRC™ pipes than for ordinary unprotected metal pipes.

To obtain more detailed information or a copy of the CSIRO Letter of Opinion FCO-2029 dated 23 January 2002 please contact James Hardie FRC Pipes Customer Service.

NOTE:

  • FRC™ pipes MUST NOT be cast in concrete slabs, walls, columns, or beams to protect them against the potential affect of structural movement.
  • The annular gap around pipes and the walls or slabs must not be less than 10mm or more than 30mm.
  • The gap between the pipe and a fire resistance rated floor or wall must be caulked with an approved sealant.

2 Hour Fire Penetrations - Concrete Floors
FRC™ pipe penetrations up to and including 225mm diameter, achieve a 2 hour FRL when the gap is filled with vermiculite plaster (as tested) or another approved sealant.

2 to 4 Hour Fire Penetrations - Concrete Floors
For FRC™ pipe penetrations up to and including 750mm diameter, and for FRLs in excess of 2 hours but not more than 4 hours, the gap may be filled with vermiculite plaster (as tested) or another approved sealant. This includes the gap between a 150mm long pipe sleeve installed on top of the floor slab. Alternatively, other approved fire resistant caulking systems may be used. Refer to CSIRO Letter of Opinion FCO-2028 dated 24 January 2002 available from James Hardie FRC Pipes Customer Service.

4 Hour Fire Penetrations - Masonry and/or Concrete Walls
For FRC™ pipe penetrations up to and including 750mm diameter through masonry and concrete walls, the gap may be filled with vermiculite plaster (as tested) or other approved sealant.
NOTE:  No pipe sleeves are required.
