Analyse your real drainage costs with our new Installation Cost Calculator.

Welcome to the first issue of Site Seeing for 2004. This month we explore a range of issues affecting construction industry professionals, from project costs and staff shortages, to project design and product performance. One of the major initiatives delivering benefits to the industry is the adoption of the revised design standard for fibre reinforced concrete pipes (AS4139). The Standards committee has again taken a conservative approach with their design parameters, ensuring minimum performance criteria for pipes.

Project costs are always a hot topic so we take the opportunity to explore these in more detail with our new installation cost calculator. The calculator is now available online and provides a great tool for creating a full picture of your drainage costs, not just the purchase price. So enter in your project details and see where you can save.

Warren Roberts, National President of the IPWEA also joins us this issue to discuss the shortage of experienced professionals within the industry, and examines why it is fast approaching crisis point. He provides a valuable insight into ways in which the industry may negate this trend.

This year has provided some great opportunities for James Hardie, as we have had the opportunity to be involved in some of Australia’s landmark projects including The Regional Fast Rail project in Victoria, and the prestigious Kingston Foreshore development on the banks of Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra. We also showcase the project efficiencies of Christopher Contracting in Brisbane’s west, who use a combination of high performance product and equipment to achieve exceptional project efficiencies.

The benefits of FRC pipes are used in many projects across Australia, from small commercial developments, to residential sub-divisions and large infrastructure projects. So what’s the reason behind the success of FRC pipe? We take a look at why it is such a valuable proposition for so many contractors across the country.

If you have any feedback or topics you would like to see covered in our next issue, please drop us a line. Until then, happy reading…

Best Regards

Addressing the Shortage of Experienced Professionals
A very salient message was delivered at our 2003 National Conference that really struck a chord with all delegates – and perhaps with you. It is clear that there is a significant gap in the recruitment and availability of young engineering graduates and other technical staff in our industry.

No Grade, No Problem at Kingston Foreshore
The Kingston Foreshore Redevelopment represents a new era of luxury living in Australia’s capital. Under the management of Kingston Foreshore, a division of the Land Development Agency, the 37 hectare development will deliver a vibrant mixed-use residential and commercial waterfront precinct, for the first time in Canberra’s history, right on the foreshore of Lake Burley Griffin.

Construction Efficiencies Blitz Industry Average
The construction contract was awarded to Christopher Contracting in December 2003, with a planned delivery of August 2004. This relatively short timeframe increased the focus for contractors to achieve a high level of operational efficiency. Stormwater drainage has been one area that has successfully provided additional time and cost savings for the project.

More than a Concrete Pipe
You are about to submit another project tender and the design specifies concrete pipe for the stormwater drainage. So which concrete pipe will you use? Fibre reinforced concrete (FRC) pipe or steel reinforced concrete (SRC) pipe? Before you decide, be sure to consider these important points…
