FAQs
James Hardie's commitment to innovation and design has produced an extensive range of FRC™ pipe products where water management requires not only the 'light, strong, long' characteristics of fibre reinforced concrete but a unique project solution.

Swale Pit
The James Hardie swale pit is the latest product innovation to demonstrate the unique versatility of fibre reinforced concrete pipe. The swale pit was developed in collaboration with several leading design consultants to address the management of roof water runoff, using water sensitive urban design principles. The swale pit was successfully developed and allows the integration of roof water, from dwellings and other impermeable surfaces, into the absorption trenches provided for the disposal of surface runoff from the road reserve.

The swale pit allows low flow runoff to infiltrate into the absorption trenches, and when the rainfall is in excess of the infiltration rate, it diverts the excess to firstly the absorption trenches, and in heavier flows combines with the surface flows along the grassed swale.

The swale pit can be provided in a variety of configurations to suit a range of design conditions e.g. with or without a pit bottom, and more or less slots around the lower part of the pit body. However, a typical swale pit is provided in two sections (top and bottom), with each section measuring 300mm diameter x 300mm deep (the completed unit is 600mm deep). The unique nature of the FRC material allows for slotting the lower section of the pit without compromising the structural integrity. Each swale pit has a 100mm diameter PVC inlet, to allow for house connection to the swale pit, and a 100mm PVC outlet, to act as an overflow into the swale trench.

The James Hardie swale pit is provided with a galvanised grated lid and attached chain. The chain secures the lid to the pit (via a 10-12mm bolt - not supplied by James Hardie) while enabling the lid to be lifted during any necessary cleaning.
