Project Name Windsor Road Upgrade Location Between Windsor and Parramatta, Sydney, NSW Client Roads and Traffic Authority, NSW Civil Engineer GHD Management and Engineering Civil Contractor RTA Construction Services (Yennora) and Belmadar Constructions Pty Ltd. Project Cost $323m (all sections) Completion Date 2006
James Hardie Products Used Over 4.4kms of Class 2 and 4 FRC™ standard rubber ring jointed pipe.
The upgrade of the Windsor Road corridor is the largest urban arterial road program undertaken by the NSW Government. The $323m investment will provide four traffic lanes between Parramatta and Windsor by the end of 2006, to give motorists and pedestrians a safer and quicker journey.
The upgrade has been a major project involving three councils: Baulkham Hills Shire, Blacktown City Council and Hawkesbury Council. The upgrade has involved a combination of FRC™ pipes and pit systems for the Norwest Boulevard to Showground Rd section, which is contracted by RTA Construction Services, and the Scholfield Road to Mile End Road, which is contracted by Belmadar.
- Steven Tinellis, Project Manager for Belmadar Constructions, was impressed with FRC™ pipes and custom-made pits, noting the value they provided during the project:
- Minimal repair work to pits - pipes and pits fit perfectly as they have been designed to suit each other.
- Quicker installation of both pipes and pits – blockouts were already provided at the correct RL’s.
- Dramatic cost savings from the use of the 4m lengths of pipes.
- Delivery lead times were reduced which facilitated better project operations.
‘The use of FRC pipes in conjunction with the James Hardie custom pits, made the task of installation quite rapid, improving on previous effects with the traditional methods’. Steven Tinellis, Project Manager, Belmadar Constructions Pty Ltd.
